Three presidents arrive for IDPs summit

THREE African heads of state yesterday arrived for the AU summit on refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons which opens at Speke Resort Munyonyo today.

THREE African heads of state yesterday arrived for the AU summit on refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons which opens at Speke Resort Munyonyo today.

Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Rupiah Banda of Zambia and Mohammed Abdelaziz of the Sahawari Arab Democratic Republic flew in late last evening.

The Sahawari President, Mohammed Abdelaziz, arrived at 2:00pm and was received at Entebbe Airport by regional cooperation minister Isaac Musumba.

Rupiah Banda arrived at 6:00pm aboard a presidential jet bearing the Zambian flag of green, red and black. Energy minister Hillary Onek received him.

The Zambian leader inspected a guard of honour mounted by the UPDF as the the army band played the anthems of the two countries.

Banda was accompanied by foreign affairs state minister Prof. Fashion Phiri, while Zambia’s deputy ambassador to Tanzania, Patrick Ngoma, was part of the team that received him.

Mugabe arrived at 6:28pm aboard Air Zimbabwe Boeing 737 with an inscription on the belly, “Great Zimbabwe.”

He wore a dark suit, pink stripped shirt with a maroon neck-tie. He was welcomed by ICT minister, Aggrey Awori and his foreign affairs minister Simbarasha Mumpengagwi who has been attending the AU ministerial council.

Mugabe also inspected a guard of honour commanded by Lt. Col. Kigozi Kaweesa.

Both Mugabe and Banda briefly stopped over to watch cultural dances by Crane Performers who entertained them.
The leaders were driven in a long motorcade to Kampala.

Present at airport to receive the leaders was Police Chief, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Ivan Koreta and the deputy commissioner general of Prisons, James Mwanje.

By press time it was not clear if Libyan leader and current chairman of the African Union, Col. Muammar Gadaffi, would attend the summit.

The prime minister of Equatorial Guinea, Ricardo Mangue Obama Nfubea and Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed are expected this morning.
