THE Uganda Ladies Open tees off at the Uganda Golf Club today, with the Tanzanians out to stretch their dominance. But they could find their match in Ugandan rookie Irene Nakalembe.

Entebbe Golf Club’s Nakalembe, in her first full season this year, has had a praiseworthy season, gauging by her performance in major events across the country.

Now the 54-hole event, to run at the Kitante course until Sunday, presents her an opportunity to prove her abilities.

She was a reserve in Uganda’s squad that finished third in the East and Central Africa Challenge Trophy mid-week, but believes she can shine on the big stage. Tanzania won the regional team tournament.

“I have been training at Kitante for quite some time and I should perform well. There are some very good players I saw but they can be beaten,” Nakalembe remarked.

She pointed out Zambian Hilda Edward and Uganda Jasper Kamukama as hard nuts to crack in the women’s individual event.

“It will be tough but I will aim at winning. I intend to go out there and do my best,” Nakalembe remarked.

Petra Nalwoga and Lillian Anguparu also offer new hope to the hosts, but only rule out perennial campaigners Monica Ntege, Jeninah Nasimolo and Eva Okatch at your peril.

The Ladies Open has over 60 golfers from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Zambia. The subsidiary event of that tees off tomorrow morning has attracted over 150 golfers.

Iway Africa, Multiple Industries, Standard Chartered Bank and Sameer Milk have sponsored the tournament.

In a related development, the Uganda Golf Union will focus on youth development in a bid to build a solid team for the future.

Johnson Were reports that Union treasurer Edwin Tumusiime said this after receiving the uganda telecom/USPA award for September in Kampala yesterday.

Tumusiime, who said it was an honour to win the award, represented the national golf team that was rewarded for winning the East Africa Challenge Cup.
