SECURITY was yesterday beefed up in Koboko town as tension increased among the Sudanese community following an inter-tribal clash that started on Monday night.

One person was confirmed dead and several others admitted with injuries after fighting erupted between the Dinkas of the Bor and Ayok clans.

The acting Koboko district Police chief, John Orijabo, said the clashes started at around 9:00pm in Arumadri village, a slum area on the outskirts of Koboko town.

The area is heavily populated with Sudanese nationals, most of them youth.
“The fight was mainly between students,” Orijabo said, adding: “One of them identified as Majak Atem was terribly injured and he died shortly after admission at Koboko Health Centre IV.”
Majak is said to have been attacked by about 20 people while he was alone in his rented house.

He was a Senior Four student at Arua Academy, but it was not clear by press time why he made the over 40km journey to Koboko when all Senior 4 candidates are busy with their final examinations. Two of the youth admitted to hospital were identified as Akot Dwon and Dau Manuo.

Orijabo said the Police had information of a reprisal attack, which necessitated the security beef-up.

Later, leaders from Southern Sudan led by the assistant commissioner of police for Morobo county, Apollo Macimo and immigration department’s Lt. Col. Andrew Marayel held a meeting with Koboko leaders.

The meeting resolved that a reconciliatory meeting be held to reunite the youth.
