Designing walkways

SOME people put more emphasis on interior decor and neglect the exterior. This is not right, since visitors encounter the exterior before the interior. And you know what they say about first impressions.

Is your home located about forty metres from the main road? Well, if you are found adjacent to any road, it is important to create a walkway to your house.

During the rainy season, it is such an inconvenience to reach someone’s house especially if the ground leading to it is bare. Designers often recommend that people use stepping stones to prevent the inconvenience posed by heavy rainfall.

After accomplishing work on the ground, one can then embark on the real design. Susana Clare, a designer in Bweyogerere, says it should not just be putting stepping stones on the ground but creating an appealing decorative pattern that aptly suits the ground.

She says one can come up with a unique walkway. “You can achieve elegance by blending decorative stones with some ground tiles,” advises Clare.

She adds that the walkway should perfectly blend with the vegetation around to avoid colour clashes. She concludes that the walk-way needs to be decorated because it gives a positive impression about the interior of the house.

Pergolas and pillars are a great option for making walkways. Pergolas are specially constructed concrete pillars with climbing plants that hang at the top. They are often used on walk-ways that connect one area to another.

For one to maintain the pergola well, the plant must be pruned regularly to avoid it becoming wild. Harriet Kawuma, an exterior designer at Bugolobi Homes, says it is necessary to plant flowers that blend well with the existent stones.

She recommends the use of decorative flower pots to compliment the design pattern. The designer says the use of decorative flower pots ensures a double design since both the flower pot and the flowers will contribute to the décor.

“Since the exterior is more subjected to wear and tear, one should choose exterior flower pots made of concrete to withstand the harsh conditions,” she advises.

The designer concludes that designers should incorporate some design patterns on the flower pots for effect.
