PITIED against globally claimed players in the shorter code of the game, MTN Heathens for the second year running had the last laugh in the Hima Makerere 10 Rugby tournament.

Facing a Mwamba side that had in its ranks prolific Humphrey Kayange, Lavin Asego and Horris Otieno who rocked the IRB Sevens Circuit this season, Heathens’ convincing victory in the final again is testimony the Kyadondo side is more than just a local giant.

The dominance on the local scene has not endeared them to rival fans but that could not stop coach/player Peter Magona’s side from registering a 22-17 victory over the more exposed Kenyans.

Heathens that are on the verge of claiming the Broadband Sevens circuit, added the Hima 10s title to the Uganda Cup and Super 8 League titles -- a clean sweep that has not gone down well with rivals, a sizeable section of which cheered Mwamba.

But Heathens captain Brian Tabaruka has no good news for them.

“As captain I am not yet satisfied. It has taken long to archive this kind of rhythm. Heathens will not rest until we sweep the entire season. We are done with the harder one, we want to go for the Sevens circuit and the Super Cup,” Tabaruka vowed.

Heathens’ rise to the summit comes at a time when hitherto dominant uganda telecom Kobs have endured a poor season.

Kobs failed to qualify for the quarterfinals and settled for the bowl.

It was a humbling experience watching them tussle for the bowl with Rwanda’s Silverbacks.

Entebbe Mongers who fell to Mwamba 24-10 in the quarterfinals beat Strathmore 7-0 to win the plate.

The usual refereeing glitches threatened to stain the colourful event but Mwamba players regained composure after they gave the chase on referee Denis Anguyo who was accused of ending the final prematurely. It turned that time had actually run out.

Mwamba captain Kayange was gracious in defeat. “Heathens played a good game and deserved the win,” Kayange said.
