A man was on Tuesday buried by a quarry in Walukuba-Masese in Jinja. Bosco Kaviiri, 50, a resident of Masese I village, was excavating stones at about 4:30pm, when he was crushed to death.

Michael Wandera, one of the dealers, said Kaviiri was excavating stones they normally use in building foundations for buildings.

“Kaviiri finished excavating the stones with his metal rods and came to collect a truck belonging to Tarasi Construction Company to load the stones,” Wandera said.

He added that he was warned by fellow excavators not to proceed to the quarry on suspicion that the stones might fall on him as the ground was soft, but Kaviiri ignored the advice.

“After 10 minutes, we heard a person yelling for help but as we approached, the stones had already buried him,” Wandera said.

He added that they retrieved the body as the Police took about one hour to arrive.

Hawali Ibanda, a machine supervisor working with Tarasi Construction Company, said over 60 residents excavate stones in the quarry and sell them to his company and Joy stone Quarry Limited.

Ibanda added that sh14,000 is paid for each truck that is fully loaded with the stones.

Kaviiri, a father of three children with a wife, had worked for two years in the quarry. The acting Jinja CID boss, Gregory Okwi, said the body was in Jinja hospital mortuary.

Abdullah Makiika, the LC1 defense secretary, said Kaviiri was the second person to die in the quarry this year. Two cows had also died on spot when they fell from a higher level of the hill.
