NEWS coming out of Kampala lately is very worrying. Just when we were recovering from the sad news of the death of Enock Ssebanga, the young man whose parents had earlier in life abused with Nazi brutality, reports came out about the death in a road traffic accident of the Vice President’s son Brian.

But Brian could not hold onto the front pages because the former commander of the UPDF, Maj Gen Kazini had been killed! But even Kazini’s story will have to give way to other death stories, because according to The New Vision of Thursday, seven people were killed in a bus accident on the Mubende- Fort Portal highway! Our news outlets have become death announcements!

Then Kony’s mother. Yet these high profile deaths which make it to the morning news are only a tiny tip of a deadly iceberg that is determined to send the entire Uganda six feet underground.

Those who are familiar with the emergency rooms of our hospitals will testify that road accidents are sending too many Ugandans to early graves, permanent disability and unbearable misery. If there is a war that Ugandans must fight, it is the war against road carnage.
