THE South African commissioner to Uganda has called for the promotion of peaceful conflict resolution programmes to end wars on the African continent.

Thanduyise Chiliza said the continent’s destiny lies in the leaders, whose obligation it is to steer political and economic development.

“We all have the obligation to contribute to the development of a better Africa,” Thanduyise told foreign ambassadors accredited to Uganda.

This was during the award of the Always Be Tolerant (ABETO) Peace Flag to the South African mission. The ceremony was held at the High Commissioner’s residence on Wednesday.

Over the past decade, South Africa has embarked on a number of initiatives to promote regional and continental stability.

It has also supported the implementation of the African Union structures and programmes, the New Partnership for Africa’s growth and the African Peer Review Mechanism.
The event attracted ambassadors from Tanzania, Rwanda and Trinidad and Tobago among others.

Chiliza urged diplomats to redouble efforts to seek peace, security and development in Africa. “We cannot hope for development without peace and security,” he said.

While handing over the flag to the envoy, James Mugume, the permanent secretary at the foreign affairs ministry urged South Africa to use the opportunity to lobby for the world Olympics.

ABETO was established in 1996 to promote peace, tolerance and co-existence among political leaders.
