OLARA Otunnu, a former UN diplomatic, is eligible to vie for the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party presidency even if he is not yet a registered voter in Uganda, party officials have said.

UPC secretary general Chris Opoka yesterday clarified that Otunnu registered as a party member on November 9, 2008 from the US.

“Most of the aspiring candidates for the party presidency are yet to fulfill the requirements. It is not Otunnu alone,” Opoka stated.

Others vying for the party presidency are MP Jimmy Akena, Henry Mayega, Joseph Ochieno, Yona Kanyomozi, Patrick Mwondah, Sospater Akwenyu and Samuel Luwero.

Meandhile, Electoral commission chief Badru Kiggundu said although they had set March 2010 as the deadline for updating the voters’ register, they may extend it to capture more voters.

General elections are planned for early 2011.
