THE Police in Wakiso have destroyed a marijuana plantation belonging to a resident of Kikandwa zone in Kakiri county.

The Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, said the plantation was identified after a tip-off by informers in the area.

“We suspect that this has been one of the main sources of marijuana that is being sold in Kampala,” Nabakooba said.

The heavily-armed Police arrested the owner of the plantation, Matia Muwonge, 62, as he attempted to escape.

The suspect later led Police to the marijuana plantation, which was hidden in a sugarcane plantation.

Nabakooba said Muwonge would be charged with possession of an illegal plantation and cultivating of an illegal crop.

The deputy head of the anti-narcotics, Robert Ojaba, said such operations would continue.

“We are targeting more areas in Wakiso, Mpigi and Iganga as the main areas where this crop is being cultivated,” Ojaba said.

The Mukono district Police commander, Carol Birungi, who oversaw the operation, attributed the increasing acts of rape, defilement and robbery to drug abuse.

The destroyed marijuana was valued at about sh3m. Muwonge said he was growing the crop to cater for his family.
