A project to assist the people of Bundibugyo district to recover from the 1996-to-2001 Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) insurgency has been commissioned.

The sh9b project, which started in 2005, was commissioned by the Belgium ambassador, Marc Gedopt, at Bundikahonda village in Ndugutu sub-county on Wednesday.

The project, funded by the Belgium government and Uganda, was implemented through the Belgium Technical Cooperation and the Bundibugyo Integrated Development Programme.

Gedopt also commissioned six classrooms at Bundikahondo Primary School, which cost sh46m, Kasitu sub-county headquarters (sh78.8m) and Bundinyama-Hakitara Gravity Flow Scheme (sh516m).

Gedopt appealed to parents to educate their children, especially the girls, for their district to develop.

“Education is the backbone of development. If you do not take your children to school, Bundibugyo will remain behind forever,” Gedopt warned.

The district chairperson, Jackson Bambalira, said the assistance was timely, adding that children in Bundikahondo were not going to school due to lack of schools.

Bambalira added that rivers Sindira and Ndugutu had made it impossible for the children to cross to other parts of the sub-county to study.

The project coordinator, Godfrey Mukwaya, said the scheme also renovated health centres, constructed water springs and provided improved seeds to farmers.
