UGANDA started her campaign for the inaugural All Africa Schools Badminton championships with a win over hosts Mauritius.

St Margaret’s Makerere and Mariam High are competing in the boys and girls’ competitions. Teams play three singles and two double games against each other for a result.

“They had a good start but we are still somehow far. We need to be in the top two of our group in order to advance to the semifinals,” said local badminton chief executive Simon Mugabi. Uganda was due to play South Africa later yesterday

Meanwhile, Margaret Nankabirwa and Brian Ssuuna have a chance to showcase their talent at the sh5m Baroda open due this weekend at Aga Khan School.

The two are expected back today after a ten-day high performance training in Nairobi, under the Road to London 2012 programme organised by the Africa body.

The tournament was launched yesterday by Bank of Baroda managing director Pramod Gupta, who said that investing in the young generation will boost the youth in the future and also make them active.

“This will ensure that they use their life sparingly and also boost comradeship and fitness amongst them,” said Gupta.
