A soccer academy worth sh200m is under construction in Fort Portal in Kabarole to improve soccer standards in the Rwenzori region. Fort Hill Academy has a gymnasium, lecture rooms for soccer students and an internet café.

Academy director Gore Mohammed said that there was need to establish an academy because of the declining football standards in the region.

Gore said that the academy will also help to identify talent in the region.
He added that the academy will also help to promote female football in the region.

“Through the academy, talented boys and girls will be nurtured for the national team, Uganda Cranes,” Gore said on Sunday.

The facility will be officially opened next year after construction is complete.

Gore disclosed that the facility was built using funds contributed by local football associations in the region that also covers Kabarole, Kamwenge, Kyenjojo and Bundibugyo districts.

Gore said that schools in the region will benefit from the academy and encouraged girls to play soccer and make use of the facility.

Fans said the establishment of the academy is timely for the development of the sport in the area. For over ten years none of the districts in the region has had a team competing in the super league.
