Kantinti, Kawuma make flying start

SHADRACK Kantinti took charge of the chess Olympiad qualifiers after five rounds at Lugogo stadium yesterday. The experienced player leads the contest with 3.5 points, closely trailed by two other seasoned players Stephen Kawuma and Grace Nsubuga.

SHADRACK Kantinti took charge of the chess Olympiad qualifiers after five rounds at Lugogo stadium yesterday. The experienced player leads the contest with 3.5 points, closely trailed by two other seasoned players Stephen Kawuma and Grace Nsubuga.

Moses Kawuma, Stephen’s elder brother, and Rajab Kamoga are close behind the leading park with 3 points in the event that started on Thursday. The players are battling to qualify for the Chess Olympiad, to be held in Russia.

Action in the world’s premier chess competition is scheduled for November. Twelve players are fighting to be picked in the final team by Uganda Chess Federation.

The final team of five players will be picked after the final round of the qualifiers on Thursday.

The event has had its upset with Walter Okas beating the 2008 chess player Harold Wanyama who has so far had one game.
