NRM party leaders in Sembabule have advised President Yoweri Museveni to halt the reconciliation process between the rivalling factions in the district.

They proposed that the party disciplinary organs deal with the matter.

The recommendation was contained in a memorandum signed by the district party chairperson, Sam Kutesa, and secretary Dr. Elly Muhumuza.

The proposal was delivered to the President on Thursday at his Kisozi Ranch in Mpigi district where he met the Sembabule party leaders.

Museveni also separately met with the rival faction led by the Lwemiyaga County MP, Theodore Ssekikubo, before he adjourned the meeting.
The memorandum stated that cases of indiscipline should not be handled through reconciliation as this would breed more indiscipline in the party.

The leaders cited the example of Joy Kabatsi, the assistant legal adviser to the President, who they said had continued to engage in partisan politics in the district using her office.

“Mr President, we thank you for giving Kabatsi a job, which was a good sign of strengthening our party. Nonetheless, she has gone ahead to misuse the office by involving herself in partisan politics in Sembabule,” they said.

Kabatsi (Independent) got the appointment after losing the district Woman MP by-elections to the NRM-sponsored, Hanifa Kawoya.

The memorandum adds that Ssekikubo and the district council chairperson, Herman Ssentongo, used the President’s office to confuse and intimidate the public during the recent elections.

Ssekikubo and Ssentongo were also accused of campaigning against the NRM flag bearers even after Museveni had endorsed them as the official party candidates.

Kutesa, who is also the MP for Mawogola County, in a phone interview with The New Vision, said: “I am glad that the President has at last come close to the truth regarding the cause of the prolonged political wrangles in Sembabule.

We have briefed him about how the conflict arose and other major concerns are contained in the memorandum we handed over to him to thoroughly study before we meet again.”

Ssekikubo, however, vowed not to appear before the disciplinary committee chaired by Kutesa.
