THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, has said the party needs to groom young leaders to take over its administration when the old generation retires.

Addressing party members at Entebbe airport last week, Mbabazi said getting new blood in the party was important.
The members were welcoming back over 20 youth who had been on a three-month leadership training in Korea. It was sponsored by the NRM.

“In cattle-keeping areas, we have a saying that a kraal in which no new calves are born soon becomes depleted of cattle. It is important that we train young leaders to take over from us when we retire,” he said.

Mbabazi, who was returning from Nairobi on the same flight with the youth, said: “We are soon rolling out a more comprehensive programme to train all our youth. I ask you to support them in the next elections because these are the leaders who will take over from us.”

The youth leader, Umar Bongo, who is also vying for the Mayuge LC5 seat, said the youth were ready to take on the challenges of leadership, adding that he had been heading development projects in the district for a long time.

The seat is currently occupied by Ikoba Tigawalana, whom the Court of Appeal recently convicted of murdering his political rival, Fred Musiitwa Nume, in 2003.

Nume had filed a petition seeking to nullify Tigawalana’s election, arguing that he lacked academic qualifications.
