THE Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has urged the public to remain vigilant and security-conscious during the festive season.

He said the Police had put in place extra security measures like foot and motorised patrols to check armed attacks, child kidnap and sacrifice, highway robberies and smuggling.

In his New Year’s message, Kayihura said the Police and other security bodies had tightened security and deployment of traffic personnel in the city and on highways.

He said information gathered from the field indicated that accidents resulting from drunk and reckless driving and speeding had been minimised.

“We expect motorists, particularly public service vehicle drivers, to continue observing traffic regulations by carrying legally-acceptable numbers of people. Passengers should ensure their safety by reporting reckless driving and other crimes.”

Kayihura said the Police had also boosted security in entertainment and places of worship. “These measures are by themselves not sufficient. It requires the vigilance of all of us to ensure the security of our country, not just during this season but all the time,” he said in the statement issued by the Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba.

Kayihura appealed to parents and guardians to look after children, who in the excitement of festivities, were vulnerable to crime.

He also warned motorists of thieves who duplicate keys and drive parked vehicles away. The Police chief advised car owners to install additional security devices like alarms and locks.
