THE former residents of Barlonyo internally displaced persons camp in Lira district have appealed to the Government to fulfill its promise made by President Yoweri Museveni in 2004.

Museveni pledged to construct a vocational institution, primary school, health centre and Kaguta bridge in memory of those massacred by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.

They also expressed concern over reports that a number of humanitarian agencies and non-governmental organisation had sent aid to the survivors of the 2004 attack, but it had not reached the intended beneficiaries.

The LRA rebels murdered over 200 civilians and injured dozens more in Barlonyo camp in 2004.

“It is approaching six years and we do not know what is delaying the process,” said former Barlonyo camp commandant Moses Ogwang on Sunday.

The President made the pledge while presiding over the burial ceremony of the victims.

Ogwang said most of the children who lost their parents during the tragedy were out of school because they cannot afford the fees and other basic needs.

He also said the residents wanted the Government to compensate people whose relatives were killed and those whose land was used for mass graves.

Residents, however, applauded Actionaid International for drilling boreholes, training communities in sanitation and income generation and donating to them 100 oxen and 50 ox-ploughs.
