THE Kampala Northern By-pass is a step closer to completion following the installation of lights on its roundabouts.

“It has been a long wait. These lights will make the road secure and clear for motorists,” said Dan Alinange, spokesman of the Uganda National Roads Authority.

The by-pass has 10 round-abouts, 10 motor bridges and one pedestrian bridge at Kyebando.

The 21km project was jointly funded by the European Union and the Government.

It stretches from Bweyogerere through Naalya, Kiwatule, Kyebando, Kalerwe, Bwaise, Hoima Road, Kawaala and ends at Busega.

A total of 17.5km of the 21km stretch is single lane, with 3.5km from Gayaza through Kalerwe to Hoima road as a dual carriage.

Works on the project kicked off in August 2004 and was expected to end in November 2006, but was delayed for three years.

This led the cost to rise from sh87b to over sh100b, which caused public anger.
