AS the year drew to an end, my mind was fixed on those that I share the next generation with — the youth. Many a time, we sit back and expect that all that we need should be cultivated by the current leadership. And when all does not go our way, then we are quick to brand the current leaders all sorts of names out of sheer frustration that is self-made.

I must register my appreciation of the NRM Secretary General, Amama Mbabazi’s concern that the party needs to train young leaders to take over its administration when the old generation retires.

He made this remark as he addressed the youth who had returned from a three month leadership training in Korea as reported in The New Vision of December 28, 2009.

The ultimate responsibility of shaping our destiny and that of our beloved country lies with the youth. We need to get more involved and build capacity to take over administration of various offices in this country. We must build the capacity now and not tomorrow or the other day. A strong youth structure is the pinnacle of building a strong party legacy.

The youth should divert their energies to more constructive works and avoid the evils of society that will destroy them. We should be in position to look back after several years and appreciate that we spent our youth more constructively and more productively.

The story of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a 24-year-old who shook the Russian Literary World in 1845 with his novel Poor Folk is more illustrative here.

After being arrested, detained for about eight months and sentenced to death by firing squad, he remarked: “When I look back at the past and think of all the time I squandered in error and idleness,…then my heart bleeds. Life is a gift..every minute could have been an eternity of happiness. If only the youth knew. Now my life will change. Now I will be reborn.”

Dostoyevsky made these remarks after witnessing three of his mates being shot to death before a last minute commutal of their death sentences by the Czar and in effect surviving death by a whisker,

So over to you comrades, let us live more responsibly so we can begin this year with more wins than losses.
