EVERY man has dreams, ideas and underdeveloped talent. And there are high chances that you will die before realizing your potential, your dreams. Pretty scary. Right? However, if it makes you feel any better, it is believed that many men die without using more than ten percent of their abilities because they either never discovered their passion or never found a cause to give to.

But it does not have to be this way for you and many men working below potential. You can turn your fortunes around in 2009. Inside all men is a desire to accomplish more and experience each day to the fullest. So why then should you continue allowing fear, doubt and low self esteem to stop you from being what you want?

Boney Mwebesa Katatumba, who rose from a green banana juice seller to a multi-millionaire real estate mogul, attributes his success to being adventurous. In his thought provoking book, Success is around the corner,’ Katatumba’s key catchphrase is “try and fail, but never fail to try.”

Change your mindset

You have to change the way you think. Believe in success and you will walk towards it. The way we think about ourselves and others, the opportunities we come across, and choices we make influence the outcome of everything we do. Makerere University senior psychology lecturer Kajumba Mayanja believes, with will and determination, every man can become anything.

“I have seen naturally bright students fail exams where dull ones excel. This happens when the former has failed to tap his potential by revising books and being attentive and focused. The same thing happens in the working world,” Kajumba argues.
You have to conquer insecurities, fear of failure and public opinion, self doubt or traumatic events. They will fail you.

Know what is holding you back

One way of changing your fortunes is being in control of your situation and having the ability to offload and deal with things that hold you back. Once you understand the things stopping you from moving forward, you can achieve your potential.
Daisy Owomugaso, an economist believes this would require you to apply new methods and ways of working.

“Most times we know what to do to become successful, but we fail to do the needful. When this keeps happening, the best thing is to come up with new principles. Plan for all your time and use it effectively to explore all areas of your potential,” she advises.

Visualise your future
Imagine what you want to be. While visualising, the person you want to become must be within your values. Otherwise you will have a hard time getting there. The more you want to become this person, the more you will succeed.

Connect with inner self

Hypnosis is an excellent tool of learning more about your personal potential. Hypnosis is a process of accessing your creative unconscious mind and allowing yourself to become connected to the inner you.
It’s not a magic trick that suddenly makes you stronger, faster or smarter. In hypnosis, you can discover things that are holding you back and the behaviour keeping you from realising your goals.

Know the purpose of your life

According to KPC’s pastor, Chris Komagum, Life is a gift to cherish. “You are put on this earth to fulfill one major purpose, a mission, if you like. If you do hundreds of things but fail to do the one thing you were sent to do, you will not fulfill your purpose in life. You are unique and blessed with a great gift with which you can accomplish your mission in life. If you fail to find your mission and your gift, you will not succeed in unleashing your potential.” One way to discover your mission is to imagine that you have won a sh5b lottery. Ask yourself where you would spend your time or what kind of work you would do. Another way is to imagine being on your deathbed.

Ask yourself what regrets you would have. This can tell you where you need to spend your time and what kind of work you need to do to unleash your potential. Remember, you unleash your potential when your body, mind and soul are in harmony.
