Throughout 2008, there was the argument as to why the Comedy Nite audience kept growing unpredictably. One group of thought suggested that more people, getting bored of local music, had started appreciating drama. The other said it was just a place to hang-out on Thursdays.

Both thoughts are right, to a point. It showed at Theatre Factory’s New Year’s comedy nite that was shifted to the Dembe Car Yard on Dewinton Road from the National Theatre Upper gardens.

The numbers were less than usual. But it was a group that appreciated drama for all its qualities. Never before has the bar area been ignored like last Thursday. And no wonder Theatre Factory was this time round taken to task to impress.

After a series of the UMEME’s campaign shows in various suburbs, Theatre Factory was ready for an audience that could only take stage drama. Ken “Pablo” Kimuli was topical, relaying tells of the visits to the rural villages during the festive season. It fitted the definition of comedy as a light heartened entertainment.

The new venue forced changes to the stage set-up. So, many skits revolved around house affairs; thefts, children and the burden of debt. For the group, this was a good test which they passed though not with a distinction. Theatre Factory returns to its home at the National Theatre this Thursday.
