MAKERERE University chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera has asked the university administration to expedite privatisation of the management of the students’ halls of residence.

This, he said, would check financial mismanagement that has crippled service delivery in most university halls.

Kagonyera said this during the second day of the 59th graduation ceremony yesterday at the university’s Freedom Square.

By creating competition, he observed, the move would result into quality meals, accommodation and general services in the halls.

“If we privatise these halls, whatever is done in the halls will improve tremendously,” he said.

The proposal by the university administration to outsource the management of the 10 students’ halls was mooted over five years ago.

Kagonyera blamed the delay on ‘confused students’ who threatened to strike whenever the issue came up.
“The culture of violence and destruction of property by our students must end,” he warned.

The chancellor was displeased over exam cheating and other forms of academic misconduct by some university lecturers and students.

He called for a policy that would enable parents become more actively involved in the affairs of the university.

Kagonyera criticised the Government over failure to provide meals for students under the universal primary and secondary education programmes.

A total of 12,346 students would have graduated in various disciplines by the end of week.
