THE High Court in Luweero district has sentenced a 23-year-old man to 13 years in prison for defiling his nine-year-old niece writes Frederick Kiwanuka.

Ausi Kironde, a resident of Bugambakimu village in Nakaseke district, was convicted after pleading guilty before Justice Benjamin Kabiito on Tuesday.

Kironde broke down in tears when the verdict was read to him, bringing the court session to a standstill.

Prosecution led by Bernard Senteza said the victim was going to collect water at about 3:00pm on October 2, 2005, when Kironde grabbed and defiled her.

Prosecution further said a witness alerted residents who arrested Kironde and took him to the Police.

A medical report indicated that there was penetration and the girl suffered scratches on her right scapula as a result of the scuffle.

Kironde’s lawyer begged for lenience, saying the accused was a first offender who had shown remorse and had not wasted court’s time.

Prosecution, however, asked court to give the accused a maximum sentence as a measure to deter others from committing the same crime.

Justice Kabiito said the offence carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

He, however sentenced the accused to only 13 years in jail because of the mitigating factors.
