EDITOR—We noted an article entitled “PGB, Police fight to man Entebbe Airport security” published in the local press on January 16. The article was, to say the least, unfortunate. While the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) shall not be dragged into discussing the airport’s security in the press, it is important to point out for public knowledge that there is no security “vacuum” at the airport as alleged in the article.

Firstly, the security at Entebbe Airport conforms to international standards. The International Civil Aviation system prescribes the security standards and has in place a mechanism for their audit.

Secondly, the Aviation Security Personnel at Entebbe are well trained and equal to any challenges posed to the airport. In the event their strength is deemed inadequate, mitigation measures are well documented and are activated according to the security needs at the time.

Thirdly, recruitment of Aviation Security personnel at Entebbe is a rigorous exercise that follows an agreed process by all stakeholders. It is not a haphazard exercise. It is therefore untrue to allege a vacuum in the security integrity of Entebbe Airport; unless of course the story was meant to satisfy hidden intentions of the perpetrators and those of their ilk. Fortunately, these cannot thwart CAA from its mandate to maintain the highest standards of security at Entebbe Airport.
