UGANDA cricket coach Ebrahim Mohamed is confident that his side will register a winning-start against fast-improving Afghanistan in the ICC Division 3 World Cricket League today and progress to the 2011 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.

“I have got all the confidence in the world that we will do very well in the tournament,” the experienced coach told the official World Cricket League website.
Ebrahim sounded less-bothered with Afghan-
istan’s 105-run warm-up win over Cayman Islands.

Afghanistan put on 276 for the loss of 7 wickets, with their batsmen Rais Ahmadzai and Mohammad Nabi retiring after scoring excellent half centuries.
“Afgha-
nistan seems to be a good side, with some good fast bowlers, but we picked up some weaknesses as well and will be hoping to capitalize on those things and we are looking forward to playing them first up.”

With Charles Waisswa, who suffered from a Sinus infection on their arrival, not yet fit for encounter, Ahmed will count on all-rounders Kenneth Kamyuka, Ronald Ssemanda, Nehal Bibodi, Frank Nsubuga and Akbar Baig in the attempt to set the ball rolling. He is aware that the first result will mean so much to the campaign. “It (qualifying to the World Cup qualifiers) would be one of the greatest things to happen in Ugandan cricket as a lot of promises have been made if we qualify out of Argentina,” he said.

The top two countries will advance to the World Cup qualifiers that will be due in South Africa in April.

The tournament, held in Buenos Aires from 24-31 January, will see host team Argentina, Afgha-
nistan, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea and Uganda battle it out.

Uganda must finish am-
ong the top two to qualify for the qualifiers in South Africa, where among the rewards, for the top six, will be receiving ODI status for the next 4 years.
