POOL - Godfrey Mabiriizi is the new Pool Association of Uganda boss. He edged Tipper Pool Club’s Farouk Kisuze by eight votes at Pacify Hotel over the weekend. Mabirizi, owner of Lumas PC, polled 30 votes in the election overseen by National Council of Sports official Timothy Magala. The new team also has Adam Sebi as vice president, Emma Were (secretary), Faraj Ndyanabo (treasurer), George Mutebi (publicity) and Sevviiri Kizito (event secretary).

Bobby starts search for talent

SOOCER - National coach Robert Williamson will lead the technical team in search of upcountry talent starting next month. FUFA’s technical committee meeting last week which reviewed the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup and other programmes, agreed that the national side’s technical team hold one-day camps in different regions outside Kampala.

FIFA officials to inspect turf

SOCCER - The installation of the artificial turf at the national technical centre in Njeru will start next month, FUFA acting chief executive officer Edgar Watson has confirmed. Watson said that FIFA officials and the company that lays the turf will be in the country this week to start work on the project. The turf had earlier been proposed for either Namboole or Nakivubo stadium, but consultations failed to yield any results.

Bakka gives tips to Mulindwa

SOCCER - The minister of state for sports Charles Bakkabulindi has told FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa to work harder if he is to silence his detractors. Bakkabulindi was addressing the Cranes team and FUFA officials at Grand Imperial Hotel where the Ministry of Education and Sports organised a dinner for the national soccer team in appreciation for winning this year’s CECAFA tournament. “I appreciate the efforts put in by FUFA and players to bring back happiness to Uganda soccer fans. I call upon you to continue with that spirit,” said Bakkabulindi.

Faisal hails focus on youth

SOCCER - FUFA delegate Faisal Mohammed has said that the focus on youth enabled Uganda Cranes to win the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup. Mohammed explained that youngsters including Abby Dhaira, Tonny Mawejje, Steven Bengo and the tournament top scorer Brian Umony were key to Cranes’ triumph. FUFA entered a team largely dominated by home-based players in a bid to give them exposure.

SOCCER - Naluwerere-based MTN FC moved to second position of the Bugiri Division One league with 13 points after beating Busowa United 2-0 at Hindocha PS playground. Francis Oballah was on target in the 23rd minute after a defensive blunder by a Busowa defender and David Mulanira added the second.
