ELDERLY men commonly referred to as sugar daddies have devised a new method to seduce female university students into relationships, reports Charles Ariko.

Without driving to the halls of residence as they used to, the sugar daddies use intermediaries known as pimps, to reach the girls, Makerere University guild president said.

Robert Rutaro said the practice is common in most of the universities and institutions of higher learning.

He said the pimps are paid between sh200,000 to sh400,000 to provide telephone numbers of the girls.

Rutaro was yesterday speaking at the launch of a campaign against cross-generational sex under the theme “One Million Reasons to Reject Cross Generational Sex”.

It was organised by Populations Services International (PSI).

Rutaro said most of the girls who engage in cross-generational sex do not fear contracting HIV/AIDS, but worry about getting pregnant.

“They talk about it openly. They say most sugar daddies do not want to have protected sex,” Rutaro added.

Dr. Susan Mpanga Mukasa, the PSI country representative, attributed the change of methods by the sugar daddies to a concerted campaign against the practice.

“They fear to be exposed. Most of them are people who hold senior positions in society. They do not want to lose their dignity,” Mukasa said.

She said due to the campaign, the incidence of cross- generational sex had reduced from 7.6% in March 2007 to 5.3% in July 2008.
