DISASTER preparedness state minister Musa Ecweru and the NRM vice-chairman for the eastern region, Mike Mukula, yesterday reconciled in the interest of the NRM party and people of Teso.

The one-time friends fell out late last year with each accusing the other of masterminding politics of intrigue to undermine each others interests.

At the height of their differences, Ecweru accused Mukula of concocting the defilement case in which he was accused of defiling and making a 17-year-old girl pregnant.

The Director of Public Prosecutions dropped the charges for lack of evidence.

Mukula, on the other hand, accused Ecweru of ordering the siege of his home in Soroti by the military police in search of guns during President Yoweri Museveni’s visit to the region last year.

Without going into the cause of their political row, the two yesterday said they had agreed to bury the past. Both are bigwigs in the ruling NRM party and in Teso.

Yesterday’s reconciliation followed a week-long mediation chaired by Gershom Ilukor, the retired Bishop of Soroti Diocese.

Mukula and Ecweru addressed a joint press conference at Hotel Africana in Kampala yesterday to announce their reconciliation.

“We had a problem with each other’s methods of work. We have since realised that it was going to cost the people of Teso dearly. Teso is bigger than me or Mukula,” Ecweru said.

“Today is a bad day for consummate liars and prophets of doom. It is the end of politics of intrigue and manipulation. We are going to work together as brothers and we are going to re-organise and face the challenges of political forces and make sure that the NRM wins in Teso,” Mukula added.

Recalling the contributions made by Mukula and Ecweru during the insurgency in Teso and the war against the LRA rebels, Bishop Ilukor said their services were still needed.

“Teso needs unity. Teso needs the help of both Ecweru and Mukula who have done a lot for Teso and Uganda. We didn’t want to see them divided.”
