Up to 20 foreign tennis players are expected to take part in the prestigious Uganda Open at Lugogo from February 17.

Players from Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe will dock in Kampala for a week as they also compete in the East African money circuit that is currently in Kigali, Rwanda.

Leading the Ugandan challenge in Kigali is winner of the Bujumbura leg, Duncan Mugabe.

The 18-year-old youngster beat Zimbabwean veteran Martin Dzuwa 6-2, 6-1 to claim the top prize and $800 (sh1.5m) in Bujumbura on Sunday.

From the Kigali leg that starts on Thursday, Mugabe will fly straight to Kampala to prepare for the Uganda Breweries sponsored Uganda Open courtesy of Brussels Airlines.

According to John Kasule, the Uganda Lawn Tennis Association administrator they expect a record entry for the Open. “At the moment we cannot figure out how many players will come for the tournament. We are looking at 20 or up to 30 foreign players entering the competition,” Kasule said.

The tournament will start with qualifiers to the main draw on February14-15 with the unseeded players trying to make it into the main draw.
