THE Leo Rwabwogo Memorial on Saturday at Lugogo will be the first of several events planned in the next four years to honour Ugandan Olympians.

Uganda Olympic Committee president Roger Ddungu called for recognition of Olympians at a meeting on Sunday at Grand Imperial Hotel. His newly elected executive obliged, and voted to also donate a trophy to be competed for amongst boxers in commemoration of double Olympic medallist Rwabwogo who died last month.

“We are starting a new chapter in Olympics. Its not that we will be rewarding all Olympians but to honour them,” said Ddungu yesterday.

The memorial and funds raising drive is expected to attract former Olympians, parliamentarians, sports administrators and sports lovers across the country.

Meanwhile, the Olympic Solidarity director in charge of international relations, Thomas Sithole, is due in the country next week, to meet the new Uganda Olympic Committee executive.

Sithole will brief association heads about solidarity programmes during the February 19 meeting. They will also interact with him on sponsorship of Olympic solidarity programmes, talent identification and the London 2012 project.

“He heard of our new executive during a visit to Kenya and decided to extend the visit to Uganda. He will brief us on how to access Olympic Solidarity programmes,” said new UOC secretary Peninah Kabenge on Sunday.

The executive has hired an auditor to examine the accounts of the old committee. The former treasurer handed over $45,000 (sh83m) on the dollar account, and another of sh50,000.
