THE recruitment into the UPDF kicked off in Kibaale district with few females showing interest to serve in the armed forces.

Capt. Tabaro Kiconco said more males turned up.

“We received close to 100 youths wanting to join the forces on Thursday, but it is unfortunate that out of these only four were female,” he said.

Kiconco said some of the candidates did not meet the required conditions and were sent away.

“Some recruits were turned away because they never had complete academic documents and recommendation letters,” said Kiconco.

He appealed to the local leaders to ensure that they recommend those vying to join the forces to ease the work in other recruitment centres.

“To be recruited into the UPDF, one must have an O’level certificate as the minimum qualification but even university graduates can be recruited,” Kiconco said.

He said the recruiting team was expected in Mubende district today and in Mityana the following day.

Kiconco said the team would recruit in Sembabule district on Thursday and in Lyantonde on Friday.

He said the exercise would continue in Rakai district on February 22 and 23, while recruitment for Masaka and Kalangala districts would be done at the Masaka district headquarters on February 26 and 27.

Lt. Col. Sam Kakuru, the head of the recruitment team, said the exercise was aimed at recruiting qualified people.

The district chairman, George Namyaka, challenged the unemployed youth to take advantage of the opportunity and join the national army which was being professionalised.
