THE Roofings International Badminton Open starts today at Sharing Hall but without Ugandan
ace Edwin Ekiring.

Ekiring, who had confirmed that he will be in the country by the time the action starts and had been drawn as top seed, pulled out of the competition citing a busy school schedule.

“He told us that he still had a paper to write and could not make it to Uganda in time,” tournament director Simon Mugabi said of the star, who is currently in the Netherlands.

Ekiring’s withdrawal led the tournament referee Herbert Ott to make a fresh draw for the men’s singles.

The draw left Iranian Ali Shahossen as the top seed with Clemens Smola as seed number two. Wilson Tukire and Abraham Wogute are seeded third and fourth respectively.

Action starts today at 9am with first round matches in the men and women’s singles. The men, women and mixed doubles are due on Saturday, before the finals on Sunday starting 2pm.
