RWANDA’S Jean Claude Gasigwa capped an illustrious fortnight for himself by claiming the Tusker Malt Uganda Open tennis championships yesterday when he beat Kenya's Francis Rogoi 6-3 7-5 at Lugogo tennis centre court.

Gasigwa used his powerful serve and baseline shots to power himself to the second successive win for him in two weeks in the region having already claimed the ITF East Africa prize money circuit in Kigali last week.

It was a game with lots of close net battles and errors from both players as Rogoi, who was seeking his first win over the Rwandan, mixed his game with drop and slice shots which for most of the encounter caught Gasigwa off balance.

“It was a tough encounter. Rogoi played a game that was very unpredictable mixing up shots which made it hard for me on the court,” Gasigwa, said after the game. “I think I have been lucky this week.”

The 26-year-old player’s win has boosted him greatly ahead of this week’s Kenya Open where he will be seeking a hat-trick of tournament wins.

Caroline Odour completed a 4-0 women career head-to-head record over Rwanda’s Jennifer Ingabire 6-4 6-0 to scoop back-to-back wins in two weeks of action having claimed the ITF East Africa Prize money circuit in Kigali.

Uganda’s top players Duncan Mugabe and Rosette Musoke lost in the semi-finals in the sh50m Uganda Breweries sponsored event.
