THE best hopes of any kind of success at the Zone V Basketball Championship in Rwanda lay with Uganda’s women and yesterday they delivered the nation’s first victory at the tournament, defeating Burundi 77-57.

Frances Nabulobi was the star for the second successive game after gunning a game-high 20 points to help Uganda resurrect their slim hopes of winning the lone ticket to the Africa championship in September.

Nabulobi, who led Uganda with 14 points in their 95-71 loss to Rwanda on Tuesday, was in inspired form as she spearheaded her team’s recovery quest. Miriam Hamala, Hatima Kassim and Elizabeth Kizza also scored in double figures.

Uganda will need to be in similar, if not better form, when they face the much-fancied Kenya today. Kenya lost 61-52 to Rwanda yesterday and will aim to avoid any more slip-ups if they are to keep their hopes of winning the qualification slot intact.

A Ugandan win would see them strengthen their still uncertain quest while simultaneously put the cats among the pigeons for Kenya.

The Ugandan men will also get in on the Uganda-Kenya rivalry but unlike their female compatriots, they are playing for pride.

The men were walloped by Rwanda 93-68 in their opener on Tuesday and after losing 95-53 to Egypt yesterday, their chances of winning one of the two slots to the Africa Championship are all but extinguished.
