MTN is the best employer of the year 2008, the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE), announced over the weekend.

The coveted annual awards recognise employers’ best practices in human resource performance management.

The event was held under the theme: “Productivity improvement through performance management.”

Rosemary Ssenabulya, the FUE executive director, disclosed that 35 organisations participated in this year’s survey.

Ssenabulya said several companies withdrew after FUE started levying participation fees. FUE charges companies between sh200,000 and sh3.5m to participate in the awards. The sh200,000, she explained, was paid by small firms, while big organisations like the Uganda Revenue Authority part with sh3.5m to compete in the awards process.

But Ssenabulya justified this, saying it was important that organisations carry out annual employee performance audits. This, she argued, was necessary to ensure that the workers’ performance and productivity was in line with the organisations’ anual objectives.

“I am glad this clearly came out in this year’s awards,” a satisfied Ssenabulya remarked.

MTN scooped the Gold Award for operating an online performance appraisal and head-on count plan.

This, according to Ssenabulya had cascaded to the industry’s standards on performance.

MTN was also admired during the awards ceremony at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel for a job evaluation system, remuneration committee and the performance calendar.

Nile Breweries, Citbank and Century Bottling Company shared the silver award for using performance appraisal by line managers, use of 360 degree communication system and for use of quality management teams respectively.

Kasese Cobalt Company and the dfcu Bank won the HIV/AIDS initiative and critical illness awards.

They received the accolades for being the first companies to provide 100% Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) treatment for staff, wives and all biological children.

They were also lauded for HIV/AIDS community initiatives for orphans, monthly reports and offering online counselling to shy clients. Dfcu Bank was also praised for appointing a special person to handle HIV/AIDS clients.

Standard Chartered Bank grabbed the staff training and development award for its training centre, a dedicated training manager and a career plan for all employees.

The employment motivation initiative award went to Uganda Clays. The company was credited for offering childcare to all the children of the employees.

Sheraton Kampala Hotel won the human records and information and communication systems award for being the leading company in the provision of online information and communication management.

The hotel was also lauded for its confidentiality, suggestion box and for online feedback.

Hima Cement took the occupational safety and health award for the best first aid team, treatment of injured workers, compensation process and where all workers are compelled to wear protective gears.
