ALICE Okecho and Lillian Okiror opened the 2009 volleyball season with a trophy at the first leg of the Club National Beach Volleyball Circuit at Lido Beach on Sunday.

The champions, who went into the final expecting a tremendous challenge from the hard fighting pair of Diana Agaba and Josephine Nammanda, instead had an easy 21-18 21-19 result.

It was their agility and unpredictable ball distribution which kept their physically exhausted opponents chasing in vain.

Okecho and Okiror had dismissed Kenyan student pair of Viola Akisa and Yelena Juma 2-1, while Agaba and Namanda stopped Harriet Tukahirwa and Florence Nannyondo in the semifinals.

In the men’s category, seed one Lawrence Yakan and new partner Luke Eittit lifted the trophy with an unbeaten record.

The pair produced blazing spikes to dump their former partners and top seed Jeff Lwalanda and Isaac Omedo in straight sets.

Newly elected UVF president Sadik Nasiwu, flanked by Nile Breweries official Daphine Mwesigwa, crowned the champions.
