THE Jinja district chief administrative officer, Okiror Iporotum, has warned local leaders who fail to mobilise residents to improve on their hygiene and sanitation.

He cautioned sub-county and parish chiefs to be more vigilant in sensitising residents to avoid the outbreak of epidemics like dysentery and cholera.

“From now, there should be no dysentery and cholera in Jinja. We should mobilise people to dig pit latrines,” Iporotum said.

He was presiding over a two-day district council workshop at Zamo Hotel on Friday.

Iporotum said the cost of ensuring proper hygiene was cheaper compared to the money required for treament.

He directed the chiefs to initiate health inspections in their villages and emphasised that they should start by inspecting homes of political leaders, whom he argued must lead by example.

Participants at the workshop asked the LC5 chairman, Hannington Basakana, to summon Butagaya LC3 chairman Moses Walyomu, whom they accused of sabotaging sanitation promotion campaigns.
