The Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) said on Thursday that it planned to ship 270,000 60-kg bags in March, less than the 279,248 bags exported in the same month last year, due to processing delays.

Uganda has become a key player in robusta production since a crisis in former leading African producer, Ivory Coast, cut output. It is Africa’s second biggest coffee grower after Ethiopia, which largely produces arabica.

“Although harvesting of the main season in the southwestern region has started, the onset of rains is likely to delay the drying and marketing processes,” it said.

“Given that the main season in central and eastern has virtually come to an end, shipment in March is pegged at 270,000 bags.”
In February, Uganda’s coffee earnings dropped 15.7 percent to $31.2m from $37.02m in February 2008, the body said.

The nation exported 321,355 bags in February from 318,346 bags in the same month last year, UCDA added.
