THE Government has earmarked sh1.2b to setup a blood bank and renovate Hoima Referral Hospital under the Capital Development Programme.

The medical superintendent, Dr. Emmanuel Moro, on Friday said the Government had already dispatched sh800m to the hospital.

“We shall begin work this month. We expect the Government to send the balance any time. The blood bank will be in place by the end of June,” Moro said.

He added that the establishment of the blood bank would reduce the number of deaths attributed to blood shortage at the referral hospital.

“The Government has finally intervened to give hope to the people,” he said.

“Blood donated at this hospital was being taken to Kampala where there is a blood bank,” Moro said.
He added that the hospital would also procure a machine to check the blood for HIV.

He said part of the money had been used to construct a new maternity ward and a theatre for pregnancy and delivery complications.

“We want mothers to begin delivering on beds instead of delivering in corridors,” he said.
Part of the funds shall be used to renovate the deteriorating water and sewerage system at the hospital, Moro added.

He also said the hospital management was currently screening applications of companies vying to handle the renovation. Moro, however, said the hospital did not have enough doctors.

The hospital was established in 1910 and elevated to a referral status in 1994 to serve Hoima, Masindi, Kibaale, Bulisa and Kiboga districts.

The hospital has a capacity of 280 beds, but handles about 600 patients daily.
