EDITOR—It seems the Kampala Customs Business Centre (CBC) has created a new breed of unlicensed clearing agents consisting mainly of former customs officers!
EDITOR—It seems the Kampala Customs Business Centre (CBC) has created a new breed of unlicensed clearing agents consisting mainly of former customs officers!
A visit to the CBC will reveal that such ‘mafia’ are either interdicted customs officers or laid off clearing company employees who position themselves at the CBC to carry out illegal operations within the longroom with their former colleagues.
Surprisingly, these transactions go on right under the very nose of the URA authorities while petty smugglers are chased and sometimes killed at the border points! The URA’s efforts to eradicate corruption and smuggling will come to nothing unless such mafia’ are got rid of.
