THE Uganda telecom Kobs, have ruled arch-rivals MTN Heathens out of contention for the 2009 Super 8 Rugby League title.

Kobs raced to a 20-19 victory over Heathens, handing the Kyadondo side, a second successive defeat.

Kobs are now five points clear of Heathens.

“Technically Heathens are out of it. They will now may be play for pride and have to complete their games,” Kobs coach Geoffrey Mabonga said.

“They are a good side and we respect them but you don’t lose two games and expect to win the league.

“It will be very difficult for Heathens to get to the top.”

Heathens had a week earlier lost to G4S Pirates at Kampala Club.

Kobs would be leading by a sizeable margin but were held to a 7-7 draw by Mongers at Kampala Club on the same day Heathens fell to Pirates.

The rest of the teams have completed their first round fixtures apart from Pirates and Hima Impis who have to play a rescheduled match.

If Pirates beat Impis as expected, they will be Kobs’ major title rivals this season.
