BATTLE of the Souls was Matt Bish’s first film project. But the thriller, inspired by his young brother Roger Mugisha’s underworld escapades, is going places.

BOTS, as it is commonly known, is that Ugandan film which has amassed 10 nominations for the imminent Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), scheduled for April 4, in Nigeria.

For the fifth year running since 2005, the AMAA event is a celebration of the brightest and the best in African film.

Bish, the director of BOTS, who also wrote its script and co-produced the film, is one of the cream of African film personalities expected to walk the red carpet at AMAA, and perhaps bring back home an award for his debut film, which last year won Best Supporting Actor for Joel Okuyo at the 18th Balafon Film Festival, Italy.

In the film, young journalist Ryan (Mathew Nabwiso) loses his job and girlfriend on the same day. Out drinking friends, he comes across a briefcase full of cash.

It’s owner Wycliffe (Joel Okuyo), an underworld lord, employs him as a reward for finding the briefcase. But Ryan is about to find out that his new job involves sacrificing his own friends and family.

With 10 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director, BOTS, a film from an infant industry, might upset many.

Its biggest scare is Kenya’s From a Whisper, also with 10 nods, the most for any nominee this year.

The movie is available on DVD at Twinex Videos on Majestic plaza, Shop Number Six on Level Three. It is also available at Media Pro Studios on Tank Hill Road, Muyenga.
