A security officer has been arrested for helping alleged illegal timber dealers in Mukono. Sergeant Fred Kigozi Bata, attached to Mubende barracks, was arrested by the National Forestry Authority officials and the Mukono Police, while escorting illegal timber worth sh3m.

It had been hidden under firewood on a Tata lorry Reg. UAK 036K.
Sergeant Julius Lodiong, the in charge of mobile police at Mukono Police Station, said Kigozi was known for helping illegal timber and charcoal traders.

He said Kigozi had on several occasions intimidtaed operatives.
“We have in the recent past intercepted over 10 vehicles carrying illegal timber from the national forestry reserves.

“The timber will have to be auctioned to public and culprits charged in court,” said Lodiong.
Monday Buwembo, the National Forestry Authority’s in charge of operations in Mukono, said encroachment on national forest reserves in the area was increasing.
Buwembo warned those involved in illegal timber, charcoal and firewood business that they would be dealt with accordingly.
