KABALE resident district commissioner is investigating reports that farmers growing Artemesia in the district have not been paid.

Cox Nyakairu said they were studying contracts which were made by over 200 farmers with Afro Alpine Pharma, a local factory. Artemesia leaves are processed to produce anti malaria drugs.

The company’s Fred Zagyenda denied the reports, saying that it was only the middlemen who had not been paid.

“All farmers have been cleared and we are dealing with middlemen who had no contracts with us,” Zagyenda said.

He said they had rejected poor quality Artemesia leaves which were harvested before maturing.

Sunday Mutabazi, a district official, said the farmers were paid but expressed ignorance over the details of the contracts they made with the company.
