THE Police in Budaka district are investigating the town council senior treasurer, Patrick Namenkere, over defilement allegations. The district Police commander, John Olar, said the victim, a Senior Two student of Budaka Universal College and a resident of Nakibuli village, is six months pregnant.

“We have almost completed our part. We will soon submit the file to the regional criminal investigations office for further action,” Olar said. The girl’s father reported the case to the Police on March 13.

Sources, however, said some senior district officials were negotiating with him to settle the case out of court.

The parent said he reported the matter to the Police after Namenkere refused to take care of the girl. “I urged him on several occasions to support the girl, but he refused. I already have a big family. I cannot afford an extra burden,” the father said.

The regional Police spokesman, Iddi Ssenkumbi, said a pregnancy test and HIV screening had been done. “She is pregnant and HIV- negative,” Ssenkumbi said.

He said Namenkere was released on Police bond. Namenkere denied having an affair with the girl, saying it was a plot by his enemies to tarnish his image.

“I have got Police summons but this is total rubbish. I do not even know that girl. So how do I defile someone with whom I have no contact?” Namenkere asked.

Budaka Universal College director of studies Erias Pado said the girl abandoned school in the first term last year. “Our regulations stipulate that any student who leaves school without any communication for over 30 days ceases to be part of us,” Pado said.

According to the Police records, a total of 2,540 girls were defiled in eastern Uganda between January and December last year.
