A PRIMARY Five pupil of Aep Primary School in Serere, Soroti died on his way to hospital after he was struck on the head by a javelin during the Kateta Sub-County athletics competition on Monday, reports Simon Naulele.

The competition chairperson, Michael Eregu, said 12-year-old Abraham Olupot was the victim of a javelin that went off course due to strong winds at Kanyangan PS.

Olupot died as he was being rushed to Ngora Freda Carr Hospital in Kumi and was buried on Tuesday.

Olupot was cheering other athletes when a child of Okodo PS threw a javelin which the wind blew to the direction where other children were standing.

“It is quite unfortunate that we lost one child at time when we were selecting the sub-county team,” said Eregu, who is headteacher for Kamusala PS. He was the only son to Moses Olupot who has seven other children.

The incident follows another death on the track last week in Namutumba of 16-year-old Denozio Muwaga. Muwaga of Bunyagwe PS collapsed and died during the final lap of his race at Nsinze. A postpmortem showed he was anaemic and dehydrated after suffering a bout of malaria a week back.
