KENYA Commercial Bank has increased its funding to the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally due May 1-3, by $10,000 (sh21m).

KCB managing director James Agin yesterday announced a $50,000 (sh107m) package, up from $40,000 last year.

Agin said that KCB will spend a further $20,000 (sh42m) on filming and airing the event on DStv Super Sport channel in Africa, South America, Europe and parts of Asia and North America.

“We know what is happening globally but we have the financial muscle to support sports,” Agin said in reference to the current global financial downturn.

He added that KCB were happy with the partnership with national motorsport governing body, FMU and pledged long term commitment to the sport.

Angin enjoyed a ride in Ronald Ssebuguzi’s Mitsubishi Evo 4 to mark the launch of the third round of the Africa Rally Championship. It is expected to attract over 10 international drivers from South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda and Burundi.

Ugandan international drivers Emma Katto and Jas Mangat will take advantage of the home turf to boost their Africa championship campaigns. Riyaz Kurji who recently landed sponsorship from Crane Bank and Harsh Impex Energy has also confirmed participation.

FMU president David Bitalo expressed gratitude to KCB for their commitment to the event.

“Since KCB came on board the event has become more attractive not only to international competitors but to co-sponsors as well,” Bitalo observed.

The three-day 302-km rally will start with a super special stage at Jomayi Housing Estates at Kawuku on May 1, before the second leg in Mityana the next day. The final leg on May 3 will also be concentrated in Mityana.
