THE Anglican Bishop of Northern Uganda Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Nelson Onono-Onweng, has announced that he will retire in November.

“I might leave office in November if God wishes or at most in January 2010. I have asked the Synod to meet in June or July to nominate candidates from whom the next bishop will be chosen,” Onono-Onweng said.

He was addressing the congregation at Christ Church in Gulu town parish on Palm Sunday.

This was also his farewell pastoral visit to the archdeaconry, having become bishop 11 years ago.
Onono-Onweng called upon Christians to love each other and stop land wrangles.

The bishop confirmed 115 Christians, urging them to be God fearing. He said during his retirement, he would train the youth at Koro Community Vocational School in Gulu.

Retired bishop Macleod Baker Ochola, who was the second chairman of the Acholi Religious Leaders’ Peace Initiative (ARLPI), commended Onono-Onweng for initiating the group in 1998.

Ochola said it was Onono-Onweng who coined the name ARLPI from the Kitgum Religious Leaders’ Peace Initiative in 1995.

He said Onono-Onweng was the first ARLPI member to convince the Lord’s Resistance Army leaders into the Juba peace talks.

Amuru resident district commissioner Yakobo Komakec said Onono-Onweng was a committed spiritual leader, who worked for the return of peace to northern Uganda.

Gulu LC5 chairman Norbert Mao hailed Onono-Onweng for declaring his retirement and asked him to remain a spiritual father and nurture political leaders in the region, especially at the time of conflict.
