A GUARD, who turned down a bribe and foiled the robbery of fuel belonging to Shell Uganda, has been promoted and rewarded with cash.

Nixon Oryem’s employer, Security Group, promoted him to senior security officer before Shell boss Ivan Kyayonka handed him an envelope containing the money equivalent to his month’s salary.

Oryem, 28, on Thursday narrated that as he watched over the Shell Aggreko Jinja depot along River Nile, a vehicle carrying containers approached the gate at 9:00am.

“I opened the gate because it was a company vehicle,” Oryem, a father of two, recollected, adding that in the vehicle was one Okiror, hired by Shell and Aggreko.

The vehicle, he recollected, parked near a waste shed, where the containers were offloaded before the vehicle left.

“Suddenly, I heard the noise made by fuel pumps when they are turned on. The vehicle returned shortly and the fuel-laden containers were loaded onto the truck,” Oryem said.

The vehicle then headed for the gate where a scuffle ensued between Okiror and Oryem after a disagreement.

He said Okiror promised to pay him sh20,000 after he had sold off the contents.

Oryem said he called for help after he was over-powered.
